Position: Senior Process Engineer

Flagsol LLC has an immediate opening for a Process Engineer to support the process design and engineering of commercial parabolic trough solar power plants.


Company Background:

Flagsol recently established a US office in Berkeley, CA to provide engineering support for a fast growing portfolio of solar power projects throughout the southwestern United States. Flagsol GmbH, our parent company, is the technology arm of Solar Millennium AG, and is an engineering company developing parabolic trough technology and providing, engineering, procurement and construction services for parabolic trough solar power plants. Flagsol GmbH employs over 100 engineers and other professionals in Germany and Spain.


Position Profile:

Perform the duties of senior process engineering services associated with technology evaluation, design, design verification, engineering, analysis, simulation, system configuration, and development all deliverables associated with detailed design of heat transfer fluid (synthetic oil) systems. Specific duties include:

• The Process Engineer will work with the Engineering Manager to plan the development of all process deliverables from the start to the satisfactory completion.
• Ability to plan and conduct independent and supervised work requiring judgment in the evaluation, selection, application and adaptation of engineering techniques, procedures and criteria for process deliverables.
• Perform process simulations, develop Process Flow Diagrams (PFD’s), and Heat and Material Balances.
• Develop P&I diagrams.
• Review existing P&IDs developed in Germany according to the KKS system and help develop ISA 5.1 compatible P&IDs. The P&IDs are for the Solar Boiler and Heat Transfer Fluid segments of the power plant. The product will comply with the current power/process industry level of acceptable P&ID representative content as practiced in the United States.
• Provide subject matter expertise in the process engineering segments of Flagsol technology.
• Supervise and direct junior level engineers in areas of process engineering delegation.
• Perform all sizing calculations for lines and process equipment.
• Develop key process deliverables, equipment sizing, utility consumption lists, catalyst lists, control valve sizing, operation and control philosophy.
• Perform an energy optimization analysis of the process design for design alternatives.
• Plan and direct Cad drafters to prepare P&IDs, conduct all back-checks and quality controls.
• Plan, lead and develop process safety management documents and work processes, QRA, PHA, HAZOP.
• Support preparation of plant O&M manuals.
• Working with others, help develop process performance guarantees.

Required Qualifications:

• MS / BS in Chemical, Process or Mechanical Engineering
• Professional Engineer license with the California Board of Professional Engineers; a PE license in either of Chemical or Mechanical branches is acceptable.
• Strong familiarity with the ASME Codes, ISA, PIP and API standards, recommended practices of process engineering and others as relevant to the scope of work and practices for the power plant industry.
• Demonstrated experience in development of P&IDs for the power or process industries
• Experience with processor (process) mechanical engineering design and specification of related equipment; design development of concentrated solar thermal power plant is a plus.
• Experience Level: minimum of ten years relevant experience
